The Consumer Price Index is a measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services. Indexes are available for the U.S. and various geographic areas.

The CPI is widely used as an economic indicator, as a deflator of other economic series, and as a means of adjusting dollar values, including for cost-of-living adjustments to Social Security payments and other federal programs.
